Your style doesn’t have to be bold or eclectic to be interesting. Loving neutrals or simplicity doesn’t make your style boring—it’s all about choosing the right pieces. When it comes to tops in particular, it’s all about the neckline.
Choosing pieces with the right neckline is key to elevating your style. It doesn’t just make your outfit engaging—it can also take pieces that might feel too youthful or not quite chic enough and completely change their vibe.

Let’s start with tank tops—undoubtedly a wardrobe staple, with a million iterations. Your simple tank tops serve a purpose and will ever go out of style, but they can feel useless when you want to put together an outfit that feels a little nicer or cooler. So what do we swap our plain tanks for? I’m loving tops with an attached neck tie, or mock necks with cut outs to add a little dimension to the higher neck line. High necks with low backs for contrast are also great, or if you want to go strapless, a foldover neckline looks so chic.

The neck tie isn’t just for tanks—I love it on a knit, too. Especially when the tie leans for the dramatic and almost looks like an attached scarf. Off-shoulder is a classic and timeless neckline for knits, and can take a sweater from casual to dressed-up. When it comes to cardigans, I love a collar. A little added ruffle adds just a bit of femininity to an otherwise simple piece.
Layered necklines, asymmetrical necklines, necklines with buttons or ties—the little differences in small details make a tremendous impact on your outfit as a whole. Simple doesn’t mean basic, and loving the classics doesn’t mean being boring. Find the necklines you love and add them to your wardrobe—figure out which ones you don’t and leave them behind. Regardless of which you choose, keep the importance of those little details in mind while styling your outfits. Remember that it’s those tiny shifts that can have the biggest impact.
